‘Major EDM venue’ Q nightclub prepares for first dance on Broadway

Your tour guide: Scott Smith (Image: CHS)
As Capitol Hill nightclub Q wraps up construction in preparation for its debut on the dance floor next week, it’s pretty clear the partners behind the project Scott Smith and Andy Rampl have one aspect of the business down pat: hype.
Last week, Smith began leading a series of tours including media, neighbors and curious parties from neighborhood businesses through Q’s construction zone to show off the new space and help stoke the fires of excitement as the new electronic music-focused dance club is readied for its first weekend of business.
The converted auto garage on Broadway just off Pike (during one of our first visits, a potential customer drove into the space and asked for an estimate) is being transformed into a 12,000 square foot dance, bar and lounge space designed by project architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.  20-foot ceilings rise above. Walls will be lit with digital color washes and the club can be sectioned off to a 5,000 square-foot venue by sleek aluminum curtains on slower weeknights. A duo of DJ booths and a major investment in bleeding edge equipment round out the spend.

Powerful power (Image: Q)
Q’s investment in electronic dance music will be pushed forward by Seattle DJ Kevin Kauer. DJ Nark as he is known was hired this summer to be the creative director at the club. Ken Batali and Ryan Schmitt are in charge of the food and drink end of things and are working out partnerships with local caterers for happy hour action as well as hoping to connect with a few nearby restaurants. By the way, if you’d like to work at Q, they’re hiring.
DJ nights and the works are still being sorted out as are cover charges, we’re told. The construction budget for the project is listed at a modest $500,000. We suspect Smith and Rampl are shelling out a touch more beyond the buildout — though Smith told CHS that his contractors at Dovetail (a CHS advertiser) came up with a lot of solutions that saved him money along the way.
Putting the finishing touches on Q’s bar (Image: CHS)
We originally told you about the first plans for Q back in summer 2010. At that point, the club was planned for a subterranean space beneath 12th Ave at Pike. “It’s going to be big,” Smith told us way back then. “We have a lot of space. But I’ve done this before in New York. It’s not going to be for everybody but it’s going to be done right.”
Back in Chelsea, Smith says he was a part of the creation of XL, a gay club that came and went and came again. XL’s gloss is now history. Here’s what Seattle’s media had to say about their Q tours:
  • The Stranger: “As you enter Q, you walk down a long corridor before countenancing the 1300 square foot main dance floor, which has an odd, curvaceous shape to it. There will be elevated spots on which to shake moneymakers, and the Funktion One sound system, fitted with huge bass bins, promises to make said shaking easy to do. There are two DJ booths, both of which are inaccessible to trainspotters. SJ Lighting—which has illuminated huge dance fests like Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival—will be responsible for the lighting. One odd fact about this system is it can be controlled and/or troubleshooted (troubleshot?) remotely by smartphone.”
  • Seattle Gay News: “Smith and Schmitt have not been nauseating in their posturing, have not been publicly venomous to already existing LGBTQ-owned and operated businesses on the Hill, and have really put a lot of work into Q. Isn’t it amazing how a business owner and manager can actually accomplish something when they aren’t worried about everyone else? “
  • Seattle Times: “About the size of a roller rink and with speakers lacing the ceiling the whole way back, the almost-finished Q Nightclubl looks to be a massive addition to Seattle’s music life at night.”
  • Seattle Met: “At 12,000 square feet and with a capacity of 700, Q is expansive, to say the least.”
A design rendering from the planning days at Q (Image: Q)
Q hits the dance floor as Capitol Hill’s other new nightclub venue is working to find its rhythm on E Olive Way. The Social debuted in May but has already seen some big changes. Smith said he’s pulling for his rookie counterpart. “A high tide raises all boats,” he said.
Meanwhile, some of the Hill’s veteran dance venues have also faced challenges in recent times and mostly overcome them. CHS reported on the challenges faced by Neighbors as the City of Seattle required a series of upgrades to allow the club to continue at full capacity.
Q will hit the ground at several beats per minute. Following its planned September 8th opening — VIPs party the night before, by the way — Q is jumping into things with both feet with plans to be part of the 2012 Decibel Festival at the end of the month.

"Flying Space Monster" - Outlander

I was blown away when I heard Outlander unleash this on Tomorrowland's Q-Dance stage, and after a quick look through the internet it seems the Belgian producer has been dropping this one hard all summer long. With a buzzing refrain that keeps coming back to tease the listener into the tumultous kick, "Flying Space Monster" is the soundtrack to any monster-fighting hardstyle hero's shuffling routine. Blast this one until the full mix is released next month!

How to Grow Your Fan Base 600% Faster For Free

“How can we grow our fan base faster?”
This is one of the most common questions we get at ReverbNation.  It’s also one of the easiest ones to answer — although I usually pause for effect before answering.
Try giving away free downloads of one of your songs in exchange for the fan’s email address and permission to contact them.
We’ve observed tens of thousands of Artists using this technique (and helped many of them do it with our tools), and the results are quite stunning.  In 2008, we studied two similar groups of artists – one group was using the technique and one group was not.  The group using this method was growing their fan relationships an average of 600% faster than those who were not.We will use "Scotty And The Reverbs" as Our example.
Picture 2 Picture 3
Many Artists struggle with the thought of giving away a good song without getting money in return.  It’s totally understandable.  A song is an extremely personal product for most musicians, requiring great effort and emotional investment to give it life.  The thought of giving it away can be just, well, heart-wrenching.  But ask yourself a question – would you rather trade your song for a dollar, or for the start of a RELATIONSHIP with a fan?
Consider the fact that the average fan will remain on your mailing list for over 3 years.
In that time you might release 3 albums, play over 100 shows, and offer up dozens of music and merch items for sale.  If that fan buys just 1 ticket, 1 album, or 1 t-shirt in that time, it was a good deal for you.  If they share your music with 5 friends or drag 5 people to your show, it was a great deal.  And imagine how many opportunities they will have to share your music with friends when they remain on your mailing list for 3 years.  If you send out just 2 emails per month, they will receive 72 communications from you.
Now, I’m not trying to suggest that simply getting people onto your mailing list will equal success.  You will still be responsible for creating a compelling product and for treating your fans right.  But, if $1 is the cost for starting a relationship with a fan, I urge all Artists to at least try it out. I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
As you might have guessed, ReverbNation offers you a great tool for growing your fanbase in this way.  It’s called the Fan Exclusive song.  When you upload or edit one of your songs on ReverbNation you can choose the “fan exclusive” option.   Doing so will automatically kick into gear a mechanism where we will begin to help you trade this song for email addresses.  Your ReverbNation page, your widgets,  and your MyBand app on Facebook (powered by ReverbNation) will all display your song for play as usual. But when a fan plays the song, they will be automatically be prompted to join your mailing list in order to get the download. Read about all of the tools after the jump.

In addition, we offer up a specific widget for trading your song for an email that can be placed on your social sites, your homepage, or blog.  It’s called the Fan Exclusive widget, and it’s in your ReverbNation widgets palette as soon as you make one of your songs a Fan Exclusive.

Setup:

In order to set up the Fan Exclusive feature, start by uploading a song to your ReverbNation account (Control Room >> Profile Tab >> Songs and Videos >> Upload Song), or click ‘edit’ next to an existing song.  You will be presented immediately with a dialog box. Choose one of the two Fan Exclusive options, depending on whether or not you want to make it stream only, or make the full download available as well:
Song Upload Box

Promotion:

Now that your song has been properly set up, you will need to know how to best promote it to existing fans.   You have lots of options, from embedding widgets or banners, to embedding links or sending out links via email to fans.
1.  Embed a Tunewidget
The Tunewidget is one of two widgets that support the fan exclusive feature. With Tunewidget, the user never leaves the page they’re on (MySpace page, blog, homepage, etc) until after they have provided their contact information. When the Fan goes to play the song, they’re presented with the 30-second sample and told that the song is a Fan Exclusive:
    Fan Exclusive Prompt
After the fan enters their information, we verify the email and unlock the stream or download for them:
    Information from Fan

    2.  Embed a Fan Exclusive Widget
This widget is designed specifically to give away fan exclusive downloads.  It doesn’t play music at all, but it does collect emails very efficiently.  It is also considerably smaller than the Tunewidget and designed to fit nicely into the smaller columns of blogs.
    Before clicking:

    After clicking:

    3. Using Links
Sometimes you need a link instead of an embeddable widget. Perhaps you want to put the link in a blog post, on a Facebook page, or send it via e-mail or on Twitter — places that aren’t great for Flash-based widgets. Links are easy to grab by going to the My Links section of your control room (Control Room >> My Profile >> My Links).  Here you will find a link for the TuneWidget and for the Fan Exclusive widget.  Each link will pop up a page that not only delivers the widget, but allow the fan to easily post it to their own pages and help drive new fans to your mailing list.Example of a direct link for the Tunewidget: http://www.reverbnation.com/controller/widget_code/tune_widget_popup/artist_149
    4.  Using Banners
When you elect to make a song a Fan Exclusive, ReverbNation will automatically generate a web-ready banner that you can place immediately on all of your other web pages. It looks like this
    visit_us_artist_149_small_scotty_snow_434x326_Scotty_and_the_Reverbs_true
So, what are you waiting for?  Go get those fans!
Widgets are easy to use if you know how to copy and paste a chunk of HTML code into your website or social media profiles.
If not, it’s easy to figure out.
The thing you do NOT want to do is place too many widgets across the web.
Reverb’s analytics are very smart and if you have 100 widgets scattered across many sites but are receiving no plays, no new fans, or no e-mail list signups your Equity and Rank will begin dropping…drastically.
If you create an account but never do anything with it, your stats will be flat-lining at 0.

Maintain your presence on Myspace and Facebook

If you are taking full advantage of Social Media, you have probably figured out you need to have a presence on all the major social networks (Twitter, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook).  It is also important to have a presence on smaller sites as well as actively trying to get your music featured by music bloggers.
ReverbNation allows you to connect your Facebook Page and Myspace profile with your RN account.
When computing your Band Equity and Chart Ranking, Reverb’s algorithms include your Facebook Likes and Myspace Fans.
With that said, it is important you spend at least 30 minutes a few times each week building your networks on those sites as well.
Obviously the more time you spend engaging with your Social Media presence, the better results you will see.
As a side note, there is an excellent Facebook App that provides a beautiful landing page.

Bonus Tips

You also need to keep in mind that Labels, Venues, and Management companies are creating profiles on ReverbNation as part of their Social Media marketing strategies.
This is important because it gives you direct access to Venues and other Music Industry contacts.
Imagine booking a small tour within 200 miles of your hometown without having to leave your bedroom or office.
It’s amazing what you can do with some contact information, a few e-mails, and a couple of phone calls.
Before closing this article, I want to mention that Reverb also offers excellent e-mail management, website building, and digital distribution services for very affordable prices. You can even create your own store which includes the ability to design and sell merchandise to your fans.
Consider ReverbNation your all encompassing control panel to building your Internet Presence, marketing your music, and building a successful and independent music career.
Until next time, may the force be with you.
Peace!

Eyes Open Report.
The European Parliament announced last week that NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is one of seven nominees for the 2013 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
Snowden was nominated on behalf of the Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL parties. [1]
“Edward Snowden has risked his freedom to help us protect ours and he deserves to be honored for shedding light on the systematic infringements of civil liberties by US and European secret services,” says the Greens/EFA in a statement.
“Instead of being given asylum in the EU, he has been abandoned by cowardly European governments. We hope our nomination will receive wide support in the European Parliament and that this can serve as a symbol of rejection of this gross, massive and illegal intrusion into the privacy of citizens worldwide”, the Greens added.
In the past the Sakharov Prize was been awarded to former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, Soviet dissident author Anatoly Marchenko and political activist Oswaldo PayĆ”.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald, who is responsible for reporting on a large portion of the leaked documents provided by Edward Snowden, highlighted the whistleblower’s nomination in a tweet last Tuesday.
The winner of the award will be chosen next month and will receive a 50,000 euro ($65,000) award.[2]

Congress Moves To Outlaw Alternative Media

censorship

It is a well-known fact that Senator Dianne Feinstein wants your guns and now she wants control over your words. Feinstein believes that a proposed media shield law should be applied only to who she refers to as “real reporters.” Feinstein chastises other reporters as “basement-dwelling, pajama-clad bloggers with no professional credentials”(By: Dave Hodges)

At issue is that the government could soon decide who is a journalist and who is not. Feinstein introduced an amendment that defines a “covered journalist” as someone who gathers and reports news for “an entity or service that disseminates news and information.” The definition includes freelancers, part-timers and student journalists, and it permits a judge to go further and extend the protections to any “legitimate news-gathering activities.” In the definition introduced in Feinstein’s amendment, somebody writing for a small town paper with a circulation of 30 would receive First Amendment protections, but Steve Quayle, John Stadtmiller, Jeff Rense, Alex Jones, Michael Edwards, George Noory and Matt Drudge would not be considered journalists; and, therefore, the First Amendment would not apply to the group of aforementioned newsmen. But Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper, who according former CNN award-winning journalist, Amber Lyon, stated that the CIA bribes reporters at CNN to cover some stories while not covering others, presumably would.
Feinstein’s Amendment includes the following verbiage which goes after nearly anyone who does not work in the corporate-controlled media in which she states that one is only a real journalist if they have worked for “an entity or service that disseminates news or information by means of newspaper; nonfiction book; wire service; news agency; news website, mobile application or other new information service…news program; magazine or other periodical…or through television or radio broadcast…” These people would have to have the “primary intent to investigate events and procure material in order to disseminate to the public news or information.” Opinion journalists are probably not be covered
The mainstream media is not the friend of people seeking the truth. The media is largely controlled by six corporations representing the same people and corporations which are trying to install the New World Order.
I have been a direct victim of these globalist lunatics and this is the story on why, I, a person who had no training as a journalist, subsequently decided to take matters into my own hands and try and make a difference through the use of the pen and the microphone.
Professionally, I teach graduate students how to perform research on their capstone projects as they complete their graduate studies. I also teach psychology and sociology courses. I am a recently retired college basketball coach. I had no training nor any desire to ever become a journalist. I have to confess that my activism was forced upon me by the likes of John McCain and his globalist psychopaths.
Nine years ago, I moved to my wonderful country home, 30 miles north of Phoenix, in order to escape the blight of urban living. Shortly after moving into my dream home, the State of Arizona, the corrupt federal government and John McCain, led a coordinated effort to force my community to forfeit our land without compensation. We had a lot of powerful people lined up against us in the media and in business as well as in politics.
My 300 neighbors, living peacefully on 1-2 acre homes surprisingly chose me to be the spokesperson of group in leading the fight to restore our lost property rights. Initially, the globalists and their mindless servants said that we were in the way of Luke Air Force Base over-flights and we should have never been permitted to move where we did. The globalists were going to use the force of law to move us. But wait, Luke AFB is 30 miles from our community and they had to fly over a quarter of a million people to reach us. Our builder received approval from all entities, including Luke AFB, before building our homes. So, we knew that the globalist excuses which were designed to force us off of our land were a lie. These unsavory people wanted us gone from the land in order to secure our precious resources for which they needed to support their globalist expansion plans.
When the globalists are busy stealing from people, organizations and nations, there are the reasons they use to justify their heinous acts, and then there are the real reasons why they engage in their never-ending, felonious assaults upon humanity. What our community leadership soon discovered was that 7 miles to the west of us, a planned North American Union Corridor (i.e. CANAMEX toll road Highway) controlled by Spain’s King Juan Carlos will someday sweep through my area. Seven miles to the east, these globalists were also planning to build a huge infrastructure support system for the CANAMEX Highway system. Not so coincidentally, my community sits on the state’s largest underground water aquifer in the Southwest. Subsequently, the John McCain-led globalists wanted us off of our land so that they could have access to our rich water resources in support of these globalist projects. Instead of enforcing eminent domain procedures upon the properties of our community, in which the globalist forces would have had to pay fair compensation under the 5th Amendment, the globalists decided to do what they do so well: steal what they wanted.
In violation of our due process rights, and without so much as any public notice being issued, the State of Arizona began to secretly consider and pass legislation which would ultimately force most of my community off of our land without compensation. All in the name of pleasing the international banksters, the state passed some very draconian laws which forbade us from repairing our homes after storm damage. We were forbidden to build pools, fences, detached garages, patios, perform roof repairs, nor could we build a barbecue pit. Most disturbingly, we were not able to rebuild in case of a fire. Oh yes, we would still have to pay our mortgage payments for a house that no longer existed, but we could not rebuild. This also made us ineligible for insurance reimbursement in the event of a catastrophe. In short, we could build NOTHING, and our homes, over time, became worthless. In 2006, we could not have given our homes away. Interestingly, our drop in property values never saw a corresponding drop in property taxes which presumably was based upon the assessed value.
I spoke to lawyers far and wide with the hope that they would take our case as I was, at that time, still deluded that our court system still stood for justice. I received a real education when no lawyer would touch our case because they were all afraid of the powerful and corrupt globalist, John McCain. Much of the local media lined up against us calling us unpatriotic and that my community was a ”threat to national security.” In fact, the editorial head of the communist-run Arizona Republic newspaper, Venita Hawthorne James, even told us that “for the greater good, we should just get off our land” (without compensation). My community lived through some very dark days and it seemed that the globalists were everywhere and were controlling everyone. Collectively, we lost a lot of sleep during this time.
After many lost battles and many frustrations, I was able to pull the right strings in the Libertarian Party and they subsequently convinced the attorneys at the Goldwater Institute to step in — and they stopped the government from forcing us off our land without even needing to file a law suit. Like so many globalists, when you shine the light of day upon their criminal actions, they quickly run for cover. In short, we won, and we won against all odds. This was a true case of David defeating the globalist Goliath.
In the process of fighting for my community, I appeared on many local and national talk shows. At some point, I attracted the attention of the late Pete Peterson who owned KBSZ radio in Wickenburg, AZ., and he offered me my own show. At first, I turned him down because I did not think I possessed the skills to host my own show. After appearing on his show for the third time, Pete announced on the air, that I was starting my own show the following Sunday. That same week, Ernie Hancock, owner of the Freedoms Phoenix website, offered me an editor and columnist position with his site. After Pete sold his station, John Stadtmiller of The Republic Broadcasting Network, offered me a slot on his great network and this is where I am fortunate to broadcasting from today.
When I look back at my life, there was nothing that would suggest that I would ever become a talk show host and I never thought I would become a writer that is read by any more than just a scant few people. My subsequent message to all of you potential warriors in the liberty movement, is that you don’t have to be extraordinary in skill, but most of all you have to possess a true sense of justice and a courageous spirit and believe wholeheartedly in what you are doing.
Ten years ago, I was unaware of the extent of the globalist de-industrialization and depopulation plans for humanity. Today, I know that humanity is in for the fight for its collective lives. I have come to realize that I am having a small impact on waking up and mobilizing some people to action. However, mankind needs all of you who are reading these words to carry the torch of liberty. And for goodness sakes, do not tell me that you cannot do it. If I can do this, anyone can. For it is only when all of us rise up together to say “no more” to the globalists, will humanity preserve its future.
Please take the first step and use your God-given talent to increase your sphere of influence. This country needs a 100 million Paul Reveres to rise up and warn the rest of our slumbering countrymen about the treacherous roads which lie ahead as we fight for our freedom and ultimately our survival. Do not wait, like I did, until you have a crisis which forces you into the fight. At some point in history, all of us will be called to fight anyway. You might as well make it a fight of your own choosing. DO IT NOW!!
If your heart is in the right place, divine circumstances will show you a way that you can use your talents in order to further the cause of liberty. When that moment arrives, as it is for so many other like-minded Americans, you will soon realize that you are where you are in relationship to our fight, not because of your talent and an omnipresent need to satisfy your ego’s need for attention, but you will come to realize that you have been placed in this position by powerful spiritual forces and ultimately circumstances beyond your control. As a result, you will develop a self-awareness that you are part of a special mission for which your creator has chosen for you to perform.
As we witness the rising tide of our liberty movement which has already begun, I cannot wait for the day when our efforts culminate in a counter-critical tsunami which will sweep across the planet and will result in the taking back of our rightful heritage from those who have temporarily absconded with our fortunes, our freedoms and the collective future of humanity. You can start by simply convincing one person per day that their life depends on their participation. This movement does not have to totally consume your life. However, it does require a regular time investment. Please do it now, because evil never takes a holiday, and mankind already has its back up against the wall. Ultimately, your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends upon your participation.
